Benin, formerly known as Dahomey, is the birthplace of Voodoo. More than fifty different linguistic groups and almost as many ethnic groups live together in the country. Since 1975 it has been called Benin: the name is related to the Kingdom of Benin and Benin City, from which the gulf on which today’s Benin overlooks took its name.
