Ghana

At the end of the nineteenth century the territory of present-day Ghana came under the control of the British with the name of Gold Coast. On March 6, 1957, the country was the first among the nations of sub-Saharan Africa to obtain independence from the United Kingdom. The name Ghana was chosen in reference to the ancient Empire of Ghana, once extended across much of West Africa. In Soninke language “ghana” means “warrior king. The country boasts one of the most stable and prosperous economies on the continent and is the second largest cocoa producer in the world.
