Togo

Togo overlooks the Gulf of Guinea for a short distance. A varied country both geographically and culturally. From the ocean to the pre-Sahelian savannahs. With the name of Togoland, it was a colony first of Germany and then of France, from which it gained independence in 1960. In the Ewe language, “togo” roughly means “to go to the water”. At the village of Togo, the Germans negotiated with a local chief to gain control of the region, whom they baptized Togoland (“land of Togo”). Later, “Togo” became a common way of referring to the entire colony.
