Guinea Bissau, one of the smallest countries on the continent with the biggest archipelago in Africa: the Bijagos islands, consisting of dozens of islands of various sizes, many of which are uninhabited. Formerly a colony of Portugal under the name of Portuguese Guinea, Guinea-Bissau proclaimed independence on 24 September 1973. The name of the capital Bissau was added to the name of the new Nation, to prevent confusion with the neighboring state of Guinea, a former French colony.
