Mauritania is crossed internally by the border between the Arab world and black Africa. The capital and largest city is Nouakchott, located on the Atlantic coast. The name Mauritania derives from the ancient Berber Mauri tribes and their kingdom, Mauretania, which became a Roman province in 33 AD. The Romans called with the name Moors all the native peoples of North Africa.
