Le Togo surplombe le golfe de Guinée sur une courte distance. Un pays diversifié tant sur le plan géographique que culturel. De l’océan aux savanes pré-sahéliennes. Sous le nom de Togoland, il a d’abord été une colonie de l’Allemagne puis de la France, dont il a obtenu l’indépendance en 1960. En langue éwé, to-go signifie approximativement “aller à l’eau”. Au village de Togo, les Allemands négocient avec un chef local et obtiennent le contrôle de la région, qu’ils baptisent Togoland (“pays du Togo”). Par la suite, le terme “Togo” s’est imposé pour désigner l’ensemble de la colonie.
